HowGirlsCode, Inc. provides after school instructional programs specifically
designed to engage and expose girls to computer science. 
 

                            HowGirlsCode Courses:

The courses are designed to be taken in order since they progress from basic computer science concepts using visual block coding to advanced programming using text based coding. Please see our overall Course Road Map for a visual. If your child has not take the required prerequisite course you may request a Course Waiver

Introduction to HTML Programming  
This class will introduce students to HTML and web design. Students will take the role of web developer and learn how to write basic code that will produce a web page for personal use. Practical applications of web design will be investigated and a capstone project will be presented.

Foundations of Computer Science

Girls will be introduced to computer science concepts using www.code.org. Topics that will be covered include binary, repeats/loops, algorithms, conditionals, patterns, debugging, and more, all in a fun, hands-on learning environment.  There will also be special guest speakers throughout the program, including a robotics demonstration.

Scratch

Girls will learn to apply basic computer science concepts with hands on visual/block programming using Scratch.  Animation, sound, loops, x and y axis, conditional statements, and debugging commands will be introduced and utilized, and participants will use their creativity to design and customize projects while building their confidence and knowledge of coding.
**Important Note:  All students will need an email address in order to be registered for a Scratch account.

Tynker

Tynker This course introduces elementary girls to programming using a drag-and-drop interface.  Students learn the basics of motion and animation, create scenes and change backgrounds, add sound and music, all while creating simple projects, animations, and games. Once a Tynker account is established through registration, students have permanent access to the course curriculum, tutorials, and special holiday and celebration coding activities.
Prerequisites: Foundations of Computer Science recommended, but not necessary

WeDo Robotics

WeDo Robotics Students apply the basics of robotics by building models and using drag and drop programming to animate them.  Using the engineering process along with the physics of simple machines, they will create a robot of their own to accomplish a task.

Beginning Scratch   3rd - 4th Grade Girls                 Not Offered at this Time
This introductory course is designed for girls in grades 3 and 4 who are beginning to program with Scratch, a visual programming language. The course comprises a series of lessons with the goal of completing a creative Scratch project as well as developing confidence and enthusiasm for coding.  Students will move sprites using beginning programming concepts. These skills will be used to create an animated story and project that will become part of our class online showcase.

Advanced Scratch    4th - 5th Grade Girls            Not Offered at this Time
This advanced course is designed for girls in grade 4 who have some experience using Scratch, or are in 5th grade.  The course comprises a series of lessons with the goal of completing a creative Scratch project as well as developing confidence and enthusiasm for coding.  Students will review the basic features of Scratch and move into the more advanced coding principles such as variables and operators.  Using the design process, students will create a game and customize it as a final project.

Scholarships

Girls who qualify for free or reduced meals (FARM) at school qualify for a scholarship equivalent to approximately 75% of the course cost. To verify income, we request that you send us a copy of the letter sent by school districts to inform you that your daughter qualifies for free and reduced meals on official school or district letterhead.  We will reward scholarships upon confirmation of the FARMs status.

Payment & Refund Policies

1) Payment: Full payment must be received at the time of registration in order to secure a spot in the course.

2) Refunds: No refunds are issued once the course begins.  Cancellations after registration will be charged a $10.00 fee to cover registration and administrative costs.  If HowGirlsCode cancels a course due to low enrollment, we issue FULL refunds.

3) Late Registration: We accept late registration if space is available, but do not pro-rate our course fees.
