Fall 2017 After-school Courses

HowGirlsCode courses are designed to teach basic computer science concepts using visual block coding.  We ask that students meet the audience grade level requirements for enrollment.

Need-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships cover up to 75% of registration fees. Scroll down to see more details.

Foundations of Computer Science

Girls will be introduced to computer science concepts using www.code.org. Topics that will be covered include binary, repeats/loops, algorithms, conditionals, patterns, debugging, and more, all in a fun, hands-on learning environment.  There will also be special guest speakers throughout the program.
Prerequisites: None
Audience: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Girls

Scratch

Girls will learn to apply basic computer science concepts with hands on visual/block programming using Scratch.  Animation, sound, loops, x and y axis, conditional statements, and debugging commands will be introduced and utilized, and participants will use their creativity to design and customize projects while building their confidence and knowledge of coding.
**Important Note:  All students will need an email address in order to be registered for a Scratch account. 
Prerequisites: None
Audience: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Girls

Little Techies

Little Techies is the introductory class for girls in grades 1-3. Participants will use a variety of programming tools and applications to support basic computer science concepts such as sequencing, functions, loops and conditionals. Students will develop problem solving skills while participating in engaging activities that encourage their logical and creative thinking.

Scratch Game Design

Tynker

This course introduces elementary girls to programming using a drag-and-drop interface.  Students learn the basics of motion and animation, create scenes and change backgrounds, add sound and music, all while creating simple projects, animations, and games. Once a Tynker account is established through registration, students have permanent access to the course curriculum, tutorials, and special holiday and celebration coding activities.
Prerequisites: None

WeDo Robotics

WeDo Robotics Students apply the basics of robotics by building models and using drag and drop programming to animate them.  Using the engineering process along with the physics of simple machines, they will create a robot of their own to accomplish a task.
Prerequisites: Foundations of Computer Science recommended, but not necessary
Audience: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Girls

Weekend Coding: Scratch

Weekend Coding: Scratch Join us for a 6-week session of Saturday computing classes to learn how to combine creative thinking and computational ideas while designing projects using Scratch programming.   Girls will create animations, games, and art using problem solving and design skills.  Computational concepts covered include iteration, conditionals, and broadcasting, and mathematical concepts include coordinates, variables, and random numbers.  Attendees will need to come to class with a Scratch account created at home.
Prerequisites: None    
Audience: 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Girls                            Registration Open

Scholarships (Tuition Discounts)

Need-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships cover up to 75% of registration fees.

We prioritize these tuition discounts to girls who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals at school. To verify income, we request you send us a copy of the letter sent by school districts confirming this status. 

Students who are not eligible for Free and Reduced Meals may also apply for scholarships. If you would like to request a financial assistance, please complete this form and our Program Assistant will be in touch with you.


Payment & Refund Policies

1) Payment: Full payment must be received at the time of registration in order to secure a spot in the course.

2) Refunds: No refunds are issued once the course begins.  Cancellations after registration will be charged a $10.00 fee to cover registration and administrative costs.  If HowGirlsCode cancels a course due to low enrollment, we issue FULL refunds.

3) Late Registration: We accept late registration if space is available, but do not pro-rate our course fees.
