2019 Fall After-School Courses

HowGirlsCode courses are designed to teach basic computer science concepts using visual block coding.  We ask that students meet the audience grade level requirements for enrollment.

Need-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships cover up to 75% of registration fees. Scroll down to see more details. Classes are grouped according to school.

Bryant Woods Elementary School
Tynker

This course introduces elementary girls to programming using a drag-and-drop interface.  Students learn the basics of motion and animation, create scenes and change backgrounds, add sound and music, all while creating simple projects, animations, and games. Once a Tynker account is established through registration, students have permanent access to the course curriculum, tutorials, and special holiday and celebration coding activities.
Prerequisites: None
Audience: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Girls
Cost: Free*
Dates: October 16 - December 11, 2019 (Make up class, December 18)

Foundations of Computer Science

Girls will be introduced to computer science concepts using www.code.org. Topics that will be covered include binary, repeats/loops, algorithms, conditionals, patterns, debugging, and more, all in a fun, hands-on learning environment.  There will also be special guest speakers throughout the program.
Audience:
3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Girls
Cost: Free*

Girls will learn to apply basic computer science concepts with hands on visual/block programming using Scratch.  Animation, sound, loops, x and y axis, conditional statements, and debugging commands will be introduced and utilized, and participants will use their creativity to design and customize projects while building their confidence and knowledge of coding.
Important Note:  All students will need an email address in order to register for a Scratch account. Directions for creating a Scratch account will be shared once registration for the course is complete.
Prerequisites: None
Audience: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Girls

Veterans Elementary School
Little Techies

From the very first class, children receive more than just computer basics. Each experience integrates sophisticated technology concepts such as E-mail and the Internet in an age-appropriate way that even our youngest students understand and enjoy.  During class, children become Computer Detectives on a learning adventure to imaginative places such as the Email Trail or Internet Island. Classes start with our custom interactive video voicemail describing a new, fun-filled mission. Advancing at their own pace, children proudly apply new technology skills to solve problems and accomplish their goal.
Prerequisites: None
Audience: 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade Girls

Worthington Elementary School
Robotics - EV3

Students apply the basics of robotics by building models and using drag and drop programming to animate them.  Using the engineering process along with the physics of simple machines, they will create a robot of their own to accomplish a task.
Prerequisites: Foundations of Computer Science recommended, but not necessary
Audience: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Girls

Scholarships (Tuition Discounts)

Need-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships cover up to 75% of registration fees.

We prioritize these tuition discounts to girls who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals at school. To verify income, we request you send us a copy of the letter sent by school districts confirming this status. 

Students who are not eligible for Free and Reduced Meals may also apply for scholarships. If you would like to request a financial assistance, please complete this form and our HowGirlsCode Team will be in touch with you.


Payment & Refund Policies

1) Payment: Full payment must be received at the time of registration in order to secure a spot in the course.

2) Refunds: No refunds are issued once the course begins.  Cancellations after registration will be charged a $10.00 fee to cover registration and administrative costs.  If HowGirlsCode cancels a course due to low enrollment, we issue FULL refunds.

3) Late Registration: We accept late registration if space is available, but do not pro-rate our course fees.
